The certificate lists the ATOL holder, the ATOL number, the flights and services covered, and what the passenger should do if the ATOL holder fails. It has to be issued whether the booking is in a shop, over the phone, or online, and it has to reach the customer as soon as possible after payment. Support teams get a steady trickle of tickets from customers who cannot find the certificate in their inbox.

Is the ATOL certificate the same as a booking confirmation?
No. The booking confirmation lists the trip details. The ATOL certificate is a separate document that proves the trip is covered by the ATOL scheme.
Does every travel product need an ATOL certificate?
No, only ATOL-protected sales (mainly air packages and Flight-Plus). A standalone hotel or car rental sold by itself does not carry an ATOL certificate.
