Involuntary Reroute

An involuntary reroute is an airline-initiated change to a passenger’s routing driven by IRROPS, a schedule change past the significant threshold, or a cancelled flight.

The passenger has three rights under most carrier contracts: accept the protected alternative, choose a different reasonable routing (often on interline partners), or take a full refund. The agent picks the path and stamps the correct INVOL endorsement in the ticket to protect against an ADM. Ancillaries usually break on the new segment and need to be re-added or refunded via EMD.

Involuntary reroute volume spikes during weather events and crew disruptions, so queue routing and SLA targets need seasonal tuning.

Common questions

Does an involuntary reroute cost the passenger anything?
No. The airline absorbs the fare difference within the same cabin. Any upgrade the passenger asks for is a separate collect.

What endorsement is needed on the reissue?
INVOL REROUTE (or the carrier’s exact wording) plus the reason code. Missing endorsements are the top cause of downstream ADMs on reroutes.
